No hardrive?

Need help installing gOS? Come on in.

No hardrive?

Postby BugsBunny on Wed Feb 03, 2010 11:09 pm

I'm having problems installing. I tried live USB and the only place I could install was the USB drive. Made a live cd and I no partitins show up. My hardrive is working perfectly so why won't it let me install?

Hi BugsBunny,

Boot into LiveCD environment.

open a terminal or command line and type the following

Code: Select all
sudo fdisk -l

confirm your password

Then post your output here on the site.

We'll take it from there...

here it is

"fdisk [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK Change partition table
fdisk -l [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK List partition table(s)
fdisk -s PARTITION Give partition size(s) in blocks
fdisk -v Give fdisk version
Here DISK is something like /dev/hdb or /dev/sda
and PARTITION is something like /dev/hda7
-u: give Start and End in sector (instead of cylinder) units
-b 2048: (for certain MO disks) use 2048-byte sectors"

/dev/sda2 4682 4865 1477980 5 Extended

i found out the problem with my -f disk output. i put a "1" instead of "l". i will correct this as soon as i get home and give you a proper one.

also i cannot run the live environment unless my computer is plugged in, otherwise it will get stuck on the loading screen after saying "detect hardware fail". Is that a problem?

I am doing only this case when this type of error is created

smartctl -a /dev/hda

so this will check the hard disk is connected or not.

I am facing exactly the same problem. Sucessfully booted from a usb pen drive containing the iso of the live cd, created using the universal pendrive linux installer (www.pedrivelinux.com) and when i try to install in my har drive, the partitioner only recognizes my pendrive, not my hard drive. My hard drive contains 2 partitions, one with win xp and another with sidux linux, but after installing the ssidux i couldnt boot on xp anymore, so i reinstalled the win xp and now i cant boot on the sidux, thats why i am trying to install gos, in hope i can make the dual boot to work.
I have tryed doing what someone suggested to check all the hard drives using fdisk -l. It returned the following, showing only my pendrive
Disk /dev/sda: 16.9gb, 16904093696 bytes
64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 16121 cylinders
units= cylinders of 2048* 512 = 1048576 bytes
disk identifier 0xb0bcd68e

This doesnt look like a partition table
Probably you selected the wrong device

And then it shows the partiton table for the pendrive. I am not gonna post it here couse additionally, my wireless board istn working while running from the usb live cd, so it would take me looong to copy it all here. But i am sure it only shows my pendrive, never my hard drive
So, what should i do to make it recognize my hard drive?

you are asking at the wrong place, for hardware drivers and such gOS is identical with Ubuntu 8.04 in fact for all intents and purposes gOS is simply Ubuntu Hardy heron with a nice graphical user interface and some extra application software, so in fact you are having a problem with Ubuntu 8.04, NOT with gOS. You should go to the ubuntu fora and ask about this problem there. But in all the years I have know Ubuntu (gOS) I have seen very few complaints about "not seeing the hard disk" here. In those saves I have seen the hardware was defective, or the gOS distribution was damaged.

You can ask about "not detecting harddisks" here: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=333
If you search for "hard disk not found" I am sure you will find a few hits, although they might not be exactly about the same situation.

I dont mean to be rude, but if here is not the place for asking about an installation problem that is in fact recorrent in this forum, couse gos is a derivation of ubuntu, then i dont know why this forum exists, since according to you, gos is almost identical to ubuntu. Man, i dont want to be a dutchebag, but the fact that my problem may be related to ubuntu in general doesnt mean people cant help me deal with this problem.
Also, i think you migth have not seen this problem, but if u take a brief look into the forum installing section, you will notice 4 or 5 different topics about exactly this same problem. So dont come tell me my hard disck is broken or the cable is disconnected or it is not a problem of gos couse in fact, if many users of gos are facing this problem, it is a problem of gos, even if it not exclusive of gos but a problem of ubuntu in general.
I am sorry about being so agressive, but it really makes me pissed of when people only tell you you are asking in the wrong place, this is not our problem and this problem never happened, instead of trying to help me solving this issue that is relevant to many other users. U make me fell i am talking to a support atendant of MS or something.
Now, anyone got ideas for solving this? any clues of why ubuntu doesnt recognize the hard rive when booting of a pendrive? Could this be a error inherent to systens booting from a pendrive?
Again, sorry if i was rude, didnt mean to offend anyone.
