Are you making the switch from Windows, Mac, or another *nix distro? This is where you ask the questions and get the answers.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 currently,
I dislike that there isnt a GUI interface to change the screen resolution for the xorg.conf So I cant change resolutions off of 800*600 unless Im a Linux nerd, but Im not Im a Windows(swear word) Nerd, Does this OS have a interface for getting the screen, video card or monitor set so a proper resolution can be set?

I mainly use Ubuntu for Torrents(Azureus/Vuze), DVDrip, and Rythmbox for Ipods, Does this OS Still work well with these apps.
Pretty much everything Micro$oft and Mac doesnt want you to use.

Well, there IS a menu entry "screens and graphics" for setting the screen resolution, but stupidly enough it is hidden
You can turn it on using the menu editor "main menu" which you can find in options. The "screens and graphics" menu entry is in the "extras" section.
After you have chosen the correct monitor manually you should be able to switch to resolutions beyond 800x600.

Like Ubuntu, gOS uses GNOME as a windows manager, so all applications written for GNOME should work, and if you add the right libraries most other Linux software should work too (install KDE applications, and the necessary KDE libraries are added automatically).

I've been searching the forum about screen resolution issues and have tried the solution suggested but don't have "screens and graphics" as you call it, in the main menu , only screen resolution. Screen resolution lets me go no larger than 800x600. So basically I've got a little screen sitting on a black background.
In Windows, I would have said I needed a graphics driver, but this isn't Winx so..

For information, I did a full install, using the whole hard drive it being an old laptop, Satellite A20-103, with only 20Gb HD.

Am I supposed to go get display drivers? I tried to download and install the trident cyberaladdin but it wouldn't install. I tried to install it from the original tools CD from Toshiba, no luck.

Gos sounded like a good fit for an old laptop, in theory.

Any alternate suggestions would be appreciated.

Please read carefully what is said!

Yes there is no "screens and graphics" option in the menu per default, as it is hidden (a stupid choice if you ask me).
You just need to use the menu editor "main menu" to turn the menu entry on, then it will appear in the "others" section of the menu, and can be used as indicated.

No drivers need to be installed, as this isn't Windows like you said.

p.s. I'm calling the menu entry that is hidden "screens and graphics", but that is from memory, it might well be called something very slightly different, but its in the "others" section of the menu editor, and it should be quite obvious, as there are just a few entries in "others". If its not called "screens and graphics", please report the correct name for others like you who will read this thread later.

Thanks for the clarafication. I have now found the other option in main menu.
I tried to add Screens to the main menu, but for the moment, the laptop keeps unchecking it after I check it.
The OS seems very slow and freezes every time I try to do something in the menu, but hopefully will sort itself out once I get the screen res fixed.

Hmm, how much memory do you have in your Laptop? gOS needs at least 384MB (256 + 128MB) to run well.

It's got 1Gb memory, upgraded over a year ago from 512Mb.

Okay, I now have the screen resolution fixed. I set the correct graphic card and modifed preferences to show better graphic rendering.

Now it's looking good and is not so slow. Now to play with it. 8-)
