Configuring Samba

I am trying to setup samba. To my knowledge I have successfully installed Samba as well as the smbfs in synaptic manager. The problem that I have is when I try to connect to server and type in my server ip address I get an error message "UNABLE TO MOUNT LOCATION Failed to retrieve share list from server". How can I fix this problem
