Does anyone have any ideas about this wireless issue?

Ive got an older laptop im just trying to setup as a straight web browsing computer for guests in the house (its a windows ME era computer). The wireless works 100% when loaded in windows me but when i switch to linux it shows me the wireless connections available and allows me to click them but it will not join. The icon just sits there spinning in the tray and will eventually go back to the 2 computers with an x on it. Does anyone have any ideas? This computer is ancient so connecting via an ethernet cable is impossible unless i buy a card but im not going to do that
